monoprinting and ccrr

This week I was at my friend Mia's place to do some monoprinting. The pictures here show some of the results. For this type of printing I used a page protector which was cut open at two sides. Opened it and applied some textile paints on one side of the protector. Closed it and messed the paint around. Sprayed some water of it and placed the fabric on top of it. For each piece of fabric this proces was repeated several times. On the fabric on the left also some rollerpainting was done. I have heatset the fabrics by ironing it at the back. At the moment I leave them like they are, but it is possible that I will overdye them with procion. The contrast between the paints and the color of the fabric is a bit too much to my liking. At least I did not forget to take pictures this time :-)

This is a picture of the ccrr I got in the mail today. With my dyeing and my surface design group we are doing a complex cloth round robin. Four people work on the same piece of fabric before it is returned to the owner. This piece of fabric was rustdyed, screen printed and stamped. It looks so gorgeous. The only thing I could think of adding was giving the piece a light goldwash with diluted gold textile paint.

ironing board

The world of bloggers is small. On Vicky's blog I saw a picture of her ironing board and read the story about it. In honor of Leap Year and Sadie Hawkins Day she is doing a little drawing if you post a picture of your ironing board and put a note on her blog. I will do the same thing if you put a note on my blog. The picture you see here is not one of my handdyes , but a close up picture of my ironing board. Often I am not patient enough to wait till my fabric has dried, so there are some dye/paint spots on my ironing board and also sticky remnants of bondaweg.

Some time ago I showed a picture of the assessment piece (picture at the left) which I made for the QS course. A couple of weeks ago we had a critique session and the general consensus was that the wavy rows of buttons distracted from the more linear design. So I removed all the buttons and rearranged them. The picture at the right shows how the quilt looks now.

color families

What you see on the pictures above is the result of the new colorfamily I blogged about earlier. Each piece of fabric is 1"x1". All the 343 pieces of fabric are different while for all the colors only red, yellow and blue is used. I am not going to reveal the secret how to create them. To get to know this you have to take Carol Soderlund's class or wait till her book is finised.

After I took her classes last year a group of former students decided to continue making more color families. The fabric you see above I am swapping to 9 other people who in return will send me swatches of the colors they created. Taping all these swatches is not very creative, but to see all those gorgeous colors yummie.

monoprinting

I did some monoprinting for a swap this weekend. When I had packed the fabric and taken it to the mailbox I realised that I forgot to take pictures of it. Sorry about that. I can only tell you how I did it. For this technique I used three different colors of Setacolor opaque and used a fan brush to spread the paint on a piece of acryl glass. With a comb or a skewer I drew lines in it and than carefully placed a piece of fabric on top. Rolled the fabric with a brayer so that the fabric made contact with the paints everywhere. I used several different blue dyed pieced of fabric for this. Lifted the fabric and let it dry. After that I heatset it by ironing the back.

research and quiltswap

No picture today. For my c&g course I have to do research on the last 200 years of quiltmaking in the Netherlands. There is only one author who has written two books on this subject:
An Moonen. Both her books have been out of print for years. I tried to find them second hand, but had no luck. She is working on a third one which is expected to be published in September this year. I managed to borrow the two books through the library system and am now in the middle of copying/scanning these books so that I have a copy on my harddisk.
Another thing - of which I cannot show you a picture yet - I am working on is a quilt I am making for the coming quiltswap. This is a yahoogroup of which I am a member. Twice a year we have a quiltswap on this group. Everybody who participates in this swap sends a picture of the quilt to the listowner who places the pictures on the groupsite. This way it is not known who the artists are. When all the pictures are there, every participant send a list of her/his favourites to the listowner who than starts to match everything. After this matching you send your quilt to the new owner and you receive another quilt in return.
