Opposites

For Sky is the Limit the April theme was Opposites and yes I know April has long gone :-). And I admit the theme sounded easy, but it took a long time before I had found a design which I liked. This is the one I settled on:

It started with a solid black background on which I used a multicolored thread. White on white fabric is what I used for the squares and for the circles I used a number of colored circles. Both the squares as well as the circles were quilted with matching, plain thread.  In this quilt I could combine the following opposites: black/white, solid/patterned, multicolored/plain, squares/circles, big/small and black/white versus color.

Through

The March theme for Sky-is-the-Limit was 'through'. At first that gave me problems, because what can you do with this theme, but then I realised that I could take advantage of the sample I made for EB's masterclass. Her theme for March was lines. Using this sample I only had to add the oval and I had a suitable composition for the theme through. This is what I came up with:

All the fabrics I used are my own hand dyed or hand stamped ones. This quilt will be my contribution to the SAQA auction 2015.

Painted face

A couple of years ago I painted this fabric. As I had no use for it at the moment it ended up in my stash. This month the theme for Sky-is-the-Limit is painted face and I knew that I had the perfect fabric for this :-). The outlines of the face are stitched on it.

Townscape

Being late is not something I like, but this time it happened. The October theme for Sky-is-the-Limit was townscape and this is what I created for it:

Only the doors and the windows are my own hand dyed fabrics, the other ones are commercial fabrics. As it is Friday I am linking this post to Nina-Marie's Off the Wall Friday.

Composition in blue

For Sky is the limit the theme for August was blue(s).Well as this is my favorite color, it was not very difficult to find fabric for it :-). Finding a title is more difficult. For the moment I am calling it Composition in blue. Not a very creative title for this quilt, but that is all I can come up with for now :-).  Background is a mixture of dark blue pieces of fabric. For the lighter figures on top I looked into the field of symbols like earth goddess, stars - ever lasting life, water = birth of new life.

Fill in the blancs

I have to admit that I have not been very creative the last couple of weeks. But this is a quilt which I did:

The theme for May for the Sky group was: fill in the blancs. And as you can see I took this theme literally :-).
It should not be very hard to find the complete quote. As usually all the fabrics which I used are my own hand dyed ones. The quilting design is a simple one.

Early Flight

For Sky the theme for the month April was early flight. This is what I made for it:
Background is made from my own hand dyed fabrics. I could not find a real dark one there, so the birds are made from a commercial black. Guess it is time for a dye session :-). Size of this quilt is 12"x12". This quilt will be my donation for the SAQA auction later this year. I will let you know when the bidding starts.

Summer adventure

I just realised that I had not yet shown the quilt I made for the Sky-is-the-Limit group for the month March. The theme was summer adventure and I choose a surfer. Okay I admit I have never been on a board - or have plans to do so :-). For the background I used the same technique as I did for my previous quilt Shoreline, a combination of raw edged strips with added cheesecloth. Size is 12"x12".

Contrast

This month the theme for Sky is the Limit is contrast. When I read this, my first idea was that I should make something with black/white and red, but after a bit more thinking I decided against it. Not that I don't love that color combination, but more that I have used it too often. So thinking cap was put on again and I came up with a complete different idea. This is how it looks:

The contrast is between the evergreen pines and the lonely deciduous tree. Also you can read in it the contrast between green - color of life - and brown - color of decay/death. The fabrics I used are all my own hand dyed ones. The only thing missing is a proper title, but no doubt that will come.

Winterblues

For Sky-is-the-Limit the theme for this month was Winterblues. Although winter is not my favorite season, I am happy with the quilt I could make with this theme.  I took the theme quite literally as you can see :-).
For the background I used torn strips of fabric placed at random over and next to each other. With my Cameo Silhouette I cut the text out of freezer paper. There is a learning curve with this cutter, I have to say. Have to practise a lot more to get the hang of this machine. The text was placed on top of the fabric, ironed and painted. The trees I cut out of pounded fabric. Quilting was done using a simple design.
As it is a Friday today I am posting this to Nina-Marie's Off the Wall Friday's.

Cosmos

The theme for Sky-is-the-Limit this month was Cosmos. When I read this I knew I wanted to do something with nebula's. Out of my stash I picked an yellow/orang piece of fabric and used knotted as well as stitched shibori on it to create the beginning of the nebula's. Next step was to overdye it using deep navy. To make the stars in the nebula's pop I added additional beading and some sequins on it and this is the result:

Change

Change was Sky's theme for last month. And yes, I am late in finishing it :-). My initial idea was to start with a hexagon and change the shape of it, turning the quilt into an art quilt. But as this is handpiecing it would have been very time consuming. Reason for me to change it into something else. I decided to focus on the changing of fabric, starting with a white piece of fabric, adding a bit of paint, and a bit more and so on. This is the finished result:
