ALQS3 and Birmingham

Kate had organised another ALQS swap - this time only for art quilts - and I participated in it. I entered the swap with 2 quilts and that means that I will receive 2 other quilts. Well the mail brought me today the first one. Patsy - unfortunately no blog - sent me this homage to Van Gogh. The quilt is made of up to 9 layers of rayon and one of gold lame fabric, stitched and cut to make a chenille effect. There are a few beads appliqued on the stars. On purpose Patsy left the edges a little ragged quite deliberately, considering the state of Van Gogh's mind. Isn't it a beauty? Size is 19"x22". I have used this technique only once in a c&g course, but I love the way - and the numbers of layers - Patsy used with it. Don't be surprised if this technique shows up in one of my future quilts :-).

As I blogged some time ago my Gold quilt will be on show in Alkmaar (The Netherlands) next month at the first 'art-quilts-only' exhibition. At that time I knew it had passed the first selection for Birmingham, well yesterday I heard that it also passed the second selection. So even as I did not make any special quilt for FOQ this year, one of my quilts will be there. If you go there check out the exhibition by the European Art Quilt Foundation.

Elected!

I heard today that one of my quilts (Gold) has been elected for 2 exhibitions in the Netherlands - 3 months in total. These shows are for art quilts only. There are not many (art) quilt shows here, so I am very happy with this. The other good news is that the quilt also passed the first round for the exhibition organised by the European Art Quilt Foundation in Birmingham. A definate answer to that will follow in August.

Gold

As I mentioned earlier on this blog I have been working on a challenge piece with the theme gold. Since the last pictures I showed here, I have added lutrador to it and quilted it. After I added the golden lutrador and had it stitched I zapped it with my heat gun. Most of the quilting was done with gold metallic thread, on some areas I quilted with black cotton thread. This is the final result:

I made this quilting going with the flow and I must say I really like the result.

Gold

The Dutch sistergroup of the Challenge Quilts - De Uitdaging - has at the moment the theme 'gold'. For this challenge I decided to start with a black piece of fabric. I had no specific plans to start with, just followed what the fabric asked for.

The first start was made by cleaning my roller brush on to this fabric :-). For something else I had used antique gold textile paint and there was still some on my plate when I had finished working on that fabric. So after step one the fabric looked like this:

For step two I used my funky spiral templates with gold paintsticks. This is how it looked:

Looking better but not yet complete. I spend some time with a pair of scissors and bondaweb, fused the result to the fabric and ironed gold foil on it.

I think the fabric is now ready to get fused to the batting and backing fabric. For step 4 will be quilting through golden lutrador and zapping this. And of course quilting the other areas as well.
