white

The last couple of days I have been working with white fabric only. The two pictures above are two small quiltlets - each 20cmx20cm (8"x8") - which I made for a show in Germany. The title of the show is 'How Amazing' and they requested to experiment with textile and non-textile materials with a focus on unusual techniques. For the quiltlet on the left I printed a photo of cracked ice on a transparency and added this to the fabric with eyelets. The fabric was first quilted. Additional beads and snowflake charms are added. On the quiltlet on the right I used heated lutrador, hid a cardboard circle under it and quilted it. The show in Germany opens in spring and there are plans for various venues. Both quiltlets are for sale, euro 45,-- each.


These pictures shows even smaller quiltlets, each is 15cmx15cm (6"x6"). I made these for a swap Lenna Andrews is organising. The swap is called 'Shades of White Quilties' and I used all kind of white stuff for it: cotton balls, beads, gauze, paper, decorative yarn, shells, sheers and punchinella.

For the last 2 years two of my quilt have been travelling with Gudrun Heinz's How Amazing exposition through Germany and Switzerland. This exposition is over now and Gudrun sent me an email telling me that both pieces have been sold. Here are the pictures of the quiltlets:

Size of each is 8"x8"(20x20 cm). I used commercial fabric, transparency sheet, beads, cardstock and zapped lutrador on them.

Is it not amazing what you find when you are clearing up the mess in your studio? LOL A year ago I started on a quilt based on a drawing by Klimt. It is rather narrow and long so a bit difficult to take a proper picture of:

I used commercial batiks for it. At that time I had no idea how to quilt it and it ended up under a pile of fabric and other stuff. Last week I found it again and began with the quilting. Here is the design I used for the dress:

Although it looks like it is now almost finished, that is only partly true. This quilt will be part of a diptych. I have some ideas about how and what will be done for the second one, but that is for a later post.

color palette

Three pictures of quilt tops which appears to be completely different, but they have something in common. This excercise started with a painting by Ton Schulten Chapelfield as inspiration source. I picked a number of my handdyed fabrics and created this top:


It is not yet stitched. The pieces of fabric are glued onto a background. Size is 10"x10" (25x25 cm). Next step was to use the same color palette and create a different design using different proportions and a different composition. Well certainly this flower is different. I used more blue and green in it and less red/pink/purple colors.

Size of this is 8"x10" (20x25 cm). This might turn into my journal quilt for this month.
As I said earlier on, I made three quilttops the last couple of days. For the third one, I again used the same color palette, but added some other green and red/orange colors. And again a different composition:

At the moment this quilttop is glued and fused. Stitching and quilting will follow later. Size of this one is 20"x20" (50x50 cm). Isn't it amazing how different the same fabrics can look, depending on the quantity and how you place them. After three different compositions I stopped using this color palette, but no doubt many more compositions can be made from this.

quilties swap

I participated in Lenna Andrew's brown and robin egg blue quilties swap and this is what the mail brought me yesterday. These 4 lovely quilties are made by Val Duncan, Kara Klein, SaraEllen Davis and Andrea Millington. I find it always amazing how everybody interpretates and uses the colors in their own way. And I better start working because I am also participating in her Shades of Sunshine (yellow/orange/red) swap and I have not yet started working on those quilties.
