monoprinting and ccrr

This week I was at my friend Mia's place to do some monoprinting. The pictures here show some of the results. For this type of printing I used a page protector which was cut open at two sides. Opened it and applied some textile paints on one side of the protector. Closed it and messed the paint around. Sprayed some water of it and placed the fabric on top of it. For each piece of fabric this proces was repeated several times. On the fabric on the left also some rollerpainting was done. I have heatset the fabrics by ironing it at the back. At the moment I leave them like they are, but it is possible that I will overdye them with procion. The contrast between the paints and the color of the fabric is a bit too much to my liking. At least I did not forget to take pictures this time :-)
This is a picture of the ccrr I got in the mail today. With my dyeing and my surface design group we are doing a complex cloth round robin. Four people work on the same piece of fabric before it is returned to the owner. This piece of fabric was rustdyed, screen printed and stamped. It looks so gorgeous. The only thing I could think of adding was giving the piece a light goldwash with diluted gold textile paint.

ironing board

The world of bloggers is small. On Vicky's blog I saw a picture of her ironing board and read the story about it. In honor of Leap Year and Sadie Hawkins Day she is doing a little drawing if you post a picture of your ironing board and put a note on her blog. I will do the same thing if you put a note on my blog. So, put a comment on today's post that you have posted a picture of your ironing board on your blog and I will enter you in a drawing for something special too. I am offering a fq of one of my handdyed fabrics. As this is about Leap Year, you have till the end of February 29 to comment on today's post. I will draw the lucky winner the next day.
The picture you see here is not one of my handdyes , but a close up picture of my ironing board. Often I am not patient enough to wait till my fabric has dried, so there are some dye/paint spots on my ironing board and also sticky remnants of bondaweg.

once again Montezuma Mystery Trails

Some time ago I showed a picture of the assessment piece (picture at the left) which I made for the QS course. A couple of weeks ago we had a critique session and the general consensus was that the wavy rows of buttons distracted from the more linear design. So I removed all the buttons and rearranged them. The picture at the right shows how the quilt looks now.

color families

What you see on the pictures above is the result of the new colorfamily I blogged about earlier. Each piece of fabric is 1"x1". All the 343 pieces of fabric are different while for all the colors only red, yellow and blue is used. I am not going to reveal the secret how to create them. To get to know this you have to take Carol Soderlund's class or wait till her book is finised.
After I took her classes last year a group of former students decided to continue making more color families. The fabric you see above I am swapping to 9 other people who in return will send me swatches of the colors they created. Taping all these swatches is not very creative, but to see all those gorgeous colors yummie.

monoprinting

I did some monoprinting for a swap this weekend. When I had packed the fabric and taken it to the mailbox I realised that I forgot to take pictures of it. Sorry about that. I can only tell you how I did it. For this technique I used three different colors of Setacolor opaque and used a fan brush to spread the paint on a piece of acryl glass. With a comb or a skewer I drew lines in it and than carefully placed a piece of fabric on top. Rolled the fabric with a brayer so that the fabric made contact with the paints everywhere. I used several different blue dyed pieced of fabric for this. Lifted the fabric and let it dry. After that I heatset it by ironing the back.

cyber fyber

This is the fibercard I received from Susan Lenz's cyber fyber swap. I forgot to take a picture of the card I am sending to Susan. If you want to join in this swap, there are still a few cards available.

research and quiltswap

No picture today. For my c&g course I have to do research on the last 200 years of quiltmaking in the Netherlands. There is only one author who has written two books on this subject:
An Moonen. Both her books have been out of print for years. I tried to find them second hand, but had no luck. She is working on a third one which is expected to be published in September this year. I managed to borrow the two books through the library system and am now in the middle of copying/scanning these books so that I have a copy on my harddisk.
Another thing - of which I cannot show you a picture yet - I am working on is a quilt I am making for the coming quiltswap. This is a yahoogroup of which I am a member. Twice a year we have a quiltswap on this group. Everybody who participates in this swap sends a picture of the quilt to the listowner who places the pictures on the groupsite. This way it is not known who the artists are. When all the pictures are there, every participant send a list of her/his favourites to the listowner who than starts to match everything. After this matching you send your quilt to the new owner and you receive another quilt in return.

art quiz

You Are Impressionism
You think the world is quite beautiful, especially if you look at it in new and interesting ways. You tend to focus on color and movement in art.For you, seeing the big picture is much more important than recording every little detail. You can find inspiration anywhere... especially from nature.
What Art Movement Are You?

This is a little art quiz I came across today. I know that most of these quizes are just fun, but in this case the results is true for me.

different styles

For my c&g course I had to make samples in the style of 4 different quilt artist. I blogged about that earlier. This journal quilt is inspired by Pam Rubert . If you pick petals from the flower long enough, you will get the answer you are looking for :-)

assessment piece

Nelleke asked whether Montezuma would be at the national show in Arnhem. I could not answer by email as there was no email address of Nelleke mentioned so I do it with this message. The answer is yes, all the quilts made for this Quilten Speciaal course will hang at the exhibition.

assessment piece

For the Quilten Speciaal course I took here in the Netherlands, I had to make a final assessment quilt. In my case I should work with lines and structure. The picture shows the result. It is a wholecloth quilt. I handdyed the fabric and than stamped on it using Lumiere paint. The white and the black rectangulars at the left are made from lutrador on which I used my heatgun. For the quilting I used my favourite design which comes from Dijanne Cevaal's book. When everything was quilted I wanted to adjust the columns in such a way that they stood out more so I decided to add paint to them. For two of them I used copper Lumiere for the other ones black Setacolor transparant. And to complete it, I attached lots of different shaped white buttons on it. Chosing a title was the most difficult part. Friends mentioned words like ruins, Indiana Jones and tracks. This helped a lot. Out of this came the title: 'Montezuma's Mystery Trails'.

color families

Last year I took dyeing classes with Carol Soderlund in wich we created colorfamilies using only 3 pure procion mx dyes to create more than 300 different colors. How we did that is something I am not going to reveal. You have to take classes with Carol or wait for her book. Anyway a small group of former students decided to create more colorfamilies and swap them amongst each other. The picture shows the results of the first step: 6 different colors of yellow. In this case Tangerine from ProChem.
They have now all been sorted and are ready for the next step.

I've been tagged!

I have been tagged by Margeeth

Here are the rules:

1. Once you are tagged, link back to the person who tagged you.

2. Post the rules on your blog.

3. Post 7 (weird or random) facts about yourself on your blog.

4. Tag 7 people and link to them.

5. Comment on their blog to let them know that they have been tagged

Okay so here we go:

1. My favourite bookwriter is Robin Hobbs. She has written 12 books on fantasy and I have them all.

2. My favourite animals are cats. I have 4 of them, a bit much I know. Two or three would be better.

3. My main concern is the intolerance we are seeing here now. I like the multi-culti environment.

4. My favourite actitivities are dyeing and quilting (could you have guessed?)

5. Favourite food is a difficult one. I prefer to do it the other way round. My less favourite food is fish and meat.

6. Favourite flower are many but they depend on the season. At the moment it is tulips - sign of spring - later in the year I like to buy several different type of flowers and mix them. Preferably in blue/purple or red/orange color combinations. I love my garden which has flowers the whole year through.

7. What did I do today? I started dyeing a new color family. Read this as stirring in a bucket of water for 1,5 hours. I did 4 buckets today, 14 more to follow.
